The
Hidden One Boxwood
#303 The Hidden One, 1998
This frog sits on an oak leaf that is curled. Within the curl is the suggestion of another frog,
seen only by two sets of toes gripping the leaf.
The eyes are deep and wet looking, with lenses of amber and iris of gold powder.
The frog's color comes from pecan shell stain. The texture on the back of the frog
was made by using a Japanese netsuke carving technique called "ukibori".
Tucked into a recess is a tiny moth made from deer antler.
This boxwood netsuke-like carving does not have the himotoshi of a netsuke.
