#354 Broken Shell, 2002
African Blackwood
Opal inlay
The model for this carving is a cracked and broken shell that was sitting near
my carving bench for a long time. When I found this piece of African
Blackwood,
whose size and grain fit the shape of the shell, I carved a still life
of the shell, with its cracks and openness. The process
was
quite intriguing, following the inside structure around from one
side
through to the other side, and back around the outside. I found
myself
becoming very aware of the form of the shell and
the creature that was not there anymore.
