The Cache, 2003
Mouse: Boxwood
Eye inlay and centipede: Horn
Shelf Fungus: Originated on a birch tree
Many
times in my life I have found a cache of seeds or pits which were
stored by
an industrious field mouse, sometimes even in shoes long unused
in the house.
This shelf fungus was brought to me by a neighbor who hunts mushrooms.
It sat next to me all winter, enchanting me with its beauty. While
hollowing out the
interior as I began to work on the piece, the concept of the cache
came to mind.
The result is the wary mouse quietly tending its store of wild plum
pits,
having disturbed the centipede in the process.
