Wild Rose - Covered Box
#20 - 1985
4.5 dia. x 3.25 ht. inches
One of my favorite scents is that of the wild rose flowers in June. This piece shows a very early exploration in surface carving using a wild rose motif as the subject. The glaze was likely colored with copper. It may have been electric fired, but more likely it was fired in a smaller gas kiln in an oxidizing atmosphere so that the glaze would remain green.
Inscribed on bottom "JANEL SUNRISE 1985 20". The number "20" refers to an early category number in a numbering system that was not started until many carved pieces had already been made.
The size of this box, and with the lack of comlexity of the composition places this box in the earlier period of porcelain carving exploration.
